The Rising Global Temperature - Where We Are and What We Can Do

The rise in global temperatures is one of the most pressing issues of our time. Over the past century, the Earth's average surface temperature has risen by about 1.2°C, primarily due to human activities such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial processes. This increase in temperature has far-reaching consequences for our planet, affecting weather patterns, sea levels, and biodiversity.

Where We Are and Why This Is Happening

Currently, the world is experiencing unprecedented levels of warming. The past decade has been the warmest on record, with 2020 tying with 2016 as the hottest year ever recorded. This trend is driven by the increase in greenhouse gas emissions, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O).

  • CO2 Levels: Atmospheric CO2 levels have risen from about 280 parts per million (ppm) before the industrial revolution to over 410 ppm today.

  • Deforestation: Loss of forests contributes to higher CO2 levels, as trees that once absorbed CO2 are no longer present.

  • Industrial Processes: Industrial activities release large amounts of greenhouse gases, exacerbating the greenhouse effect.

Predictions for the Future

If current trends continue, global temperatures are projected to rise by 2.5°C to 4.5°C by the end of the century. This will lead to more extreme weather events, including heatwaves, storms, and droughts, and will significantly impact agriculture, water supply, and human health.

What Can We Do as Individuals?

While systemic change is crucial, individual actions also play a vital role in combating climate change. Here are some steps you can take:

  • Reduce Energy Consumption: Turn off lights and appliances when not in use, and opt for energy-efficient products.

  • Use Public Transport: Reduce your carbon footprint by using public transport, cycling, or walking instead of driving.

  • Support Renewable Energy: Choose green energy providers and consider installing solar panels if possible.

  • Minimise Waste: Reduce, reuse, and recycle to minimise waste and its environmental impact.

  • Advocate for Change: Support policies and initiatives that aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainability.
